Abstract

Aksara Ulu is a traditional writing system that developed within the manuscript tradition of the people of Southern Sumatra and constitutes an important part of the Indonesian written cultural heritage. Studies on Aksara Ulu have predominantly employed a philological approach focusing on manuscript inventory, transliteration, and text editing, resulting in the underutilization of manuscripts as sources for multidimensional research. This article aims to develop a methodological map for Aksara Ulu studies within the manuscript tradition of Southern Sumatra. The research employs a library research method with a descriptive qualitative approach. Data were collected from books, journal articles, and relevant scholarly works, and subsequently analyzed using content analysis and conceptual analysis. Drawing upon Geertz’s cultural text theory, the findings reveal that philology serves as the primary foundation for Aksara Ulu research. However, philologically processed texts can be further developed as sources for historical, linguistic, and educational studies. Therefore, Aksara Ulu research offers broad opportunities for development and should be understood as a multidimensional field of study that contributes to knowledge production and the preservation of local cultural heritage.
