Abstract

This study examines directive speech acts in The Shadow’s Edge (2025) from a forensic linguistics perspective. The research aims to describe the forms of directive speech acts and analyze their strategic functions in investigative communication. This study employed a descriptive qualitative method, with data derived from investigative dialogues in the film. Data were collected through observation and note-taking techniques and analyzed using Searle’s theory of directive speech acts combined with John Olsson’s forensic linguistics perspective. The findings revealed 41 instances of directive speech acts, including commands, prohibitions, suggestions, invitations, advice, and requests. Commands and prohibitions were the most dominant forms. These speech acts function as tools of verbal control, behavioral regulation, and investigative communication strategies. The study also shows that directive speech acts represent power relations through hierarchy, authority, and verbal control within criminal investigation processes.
