Abstract

The phenomenon of orphanhood due to parental divorce is increasingly prevalent in Indonesia and has the potential to impact emotional development, interpersonal relationships, and romantic relationships in adulthood. However, studies on the experiences of Generation Z men with an orphaned background, particularly those related to fear of abandonment and romantic communication, are still limited. This study aims to understand the experience of fear of abandonment and the application of romantic communication in managing relational anxiety in Generation Z men with an orphaned background. This study used a qualitative method with Clark Moustakas' phenomenological approach. The research subjects were nine Generation Z men aged 18–28 years, selected using a snowball sampling technique. Data were obtained through in-depth interviews and analyzed using Moustakas' phenomenological analysis stages. The results show that the experience of orphanhood is interpreted in various ways, ranging from the loss of a protective figure, a mentor, to a source of security. Fear of abandonment appears in the form of fear of losing a partner, a need for relationship certainty, emotional validation, a tendency to overthink, and concerns about the future of the relationship.Meanwhile, romantic communication is manifested through affirmative words, open communication, gift-giving, devoting time with one's partner, and various forms of assistance to one's partner as a form of attention and care. This study also found that coping involved open communication and attention to specific activities. The research findings indicate that the experience of orphanhood is not only related to relational anxiety but also influences how Generation Z men build romantic communication and cope with emotional stress in relationships.
