Abstract

This study aims to synthesize carbon dots from melon peel (Cucumis melo L.) and melinjo peel (Gnetum gnemon) waste and evaluate their potential as plant growth-enhancing agents for spinach (Amaranthus tricolor L.). The experiment was conducted using a completely randomized design with several treatment concentrations and a control treatment. C-dots were synthesized through a carbonization process using an oven at 250°C for 45 minutes. The resulting C-dots solutions were applied to spinach plants at concentrations of 0.5 g/L and 1 g/L, while distilled water was used as the control. Plant height was observed for 7 days. The results demonstrated that C-dots application positively affected spinach growth compared to the control treatment. The highest plant height was obtained from melon peel-derived C-dots at a concentration of 1 g/L, reaching 3.7 cm, while melinjo peel-derived C-dots reached 3.0 cm on the seventh day. In general, higher C-dots concentrations were associated with increased plant growth. This study is the first to explore the utilization of melon and melinjo peel waste-derived C-dots as nanomaterials for spinach growth enhancement. These findings indicate that organic waste from melon and melinjo peels has strong potential as an environmentally friendly precursor for C-dots synthesis and sustainable agricultural applications.
