Abstract

Education plays a crucial role in improving the quality of human resources. Vocational High Schools (SMK) in Indonesia are designed to prepare students to enter the workforce according to their field of expertise. In vocational education, an appropriate learning model is required to enhance students' conceptual understanding as well as their problem-solving skills. This study aims to determine whether there is a significant improvement in students' cognitive learning outcomes in the Electrical Lighting Installation subject for Grade XI students at SMK Negeri 1 Driyorejo after the implementation of the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model. This research employed a quantitative approach using a quasi-experimental method with a nonequivalent control group design. The research subjects were students of class XI TITL 1 and XI TITL 2, totaling 66 students, divided into an experimental class and a control class. Data were collected through validated pretest and posttest written instruments. The hypothesis was tested using the Mann-Whitney test and N-Gain Score to measure effectiveness. The results indicated that the experimental class applying PBL achieved a higher posttest average (84.30) compared to the control class (78.27). The Mann-Whitney test resulted in a significance value of 0.007 (p < 0.05), indicating a significant difference. Furthermore, the N-Gain test showed the experimental class reached 67.76% (moderately effective), while the control class only reached 40.54% (less effective). The implication is that the Problem Based Learning model is proven effective as an alternative learning approach to enhance students' understanding and learning outcomes in electrical subjects.
