Abstract

The increase in fossil fuel consumption in Indonesia encourages the need for sustainable alternative energy sources. Waste Cooking Oil (WCO) has great potential as a raw material for biodiesel because its availability is abundant and does not compete with the food sector. This study aims to analyze the physicochemical characteristics of WCO-based biodiesel and evaluate its performance in 1300 VA generators through a systematic literature review approach to 2020–2025 publications. The parameters studied include density, viscosity, setane number, calorific value, thermal efficiency, and CO, HC, and NOx emissions. The synthesis results showed that WCO biodiesel has a density of 870–880 kg/m³ and a viscosity of 4.2–5.1 mm²/s, meeting SNI 7182:2015 and ASTM D6751 standards. The use of B20 blends produces thermal efficiency of 31–32%, with a reduction in CO emissions of up to 40% compared to conventional diesel, despite an increase in NOx of around 5%. Economically, the use of WCO has the potential to reduce fuel costs and support the circular economy. This study confirms that used cooking oil-based biodiesel is technically and ecologically feasible for household-scale generator set applications and MSMEs.
