Abstract

This study discusses the Quran and Hadith as the two main sources of law in Islam. The Qur'an as the kalam of Allah which was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (saw) gradually over 23 years, is the first and highest source of law. The truth is absolute and incomparable. The Qur'an serves as a guideline for life that includes three types of laws: Akidah (belief), Akhlak (ethics), and Amaliyah (deeds, divided into Muamalah ma'a Allah and Muamalah ma'a an Naas). In the delivery of the law, the Qur'an uses the approaches of Dalil Kulli (universal/general, such as the command to pray) and Dalil Juz'i (detailed/specific, such as the provisions of mahram), and Isyarah (implicit). Hadith/Sunnah occupies the position as the second source of law after the Qur'an. Hadith is defined as everything that comes from the Prophet, both speech (Qauliyah), deeds (Fi'liyah), and determination/approval (Taqririyah). Hadith is classified based on the number of narrators into Mutawatir (definite/ qaṭh'i) and Sunday. The relationship between the Hadith and the Qur'an is very close and complementary. Hadith has the following functions: Equivalent as the source of Islamic law, Hadith as Muakkid, Hadith as Mubayyinah, and Hadith as Tasyri Mustaqil
