Abstract

Oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) is a plantation crop that generates large quantities of leaf waste which remains underutilized, despite containing secondary metabolites such as flavonoids and phenolics that possess potential antioxidant activity. This study aimed to formulate an ethanolic extract of oil palm leaves into a hair serum and to evaluate its physical quality and antioxidant activity. Extraction was performed using the maceration method with ethanol as the solvent. The resulting extract was then formulated into hair serums at various concentrations. Antioxidant activity was assessed using the DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) method, with IC₅₀ values determined via a microplate reader. The results demonstrated that the ethanolic extract of oil palm leaves could be formulated into a hair serum meeting physical evaluation standards; the product was homogeneous, had a pH within the skin's physiological range (4.5–6.5), exhibited good spreadability, and remained stable during storage. Antioxidant activity tests revealed that the hair serum formulations possessed antioxidant properties, with IC₅₀ values of 274.316 ppm (F1, classified as very weak), 114.126 ppm (F2, classified as moderate), and 93.675 ppm (F3, classified as strong). It can be concluded that the ethanolic extract of oil palm leaves has the potential to be developed as a natural active ingredient in antioxidant hair serums.
