Abstract

This study is motivated by the persistence of the mapati tradition as a cultural practice intersecting with Islamic teachings in Tuban Regency. The aim of this research is to examine the meaning, practice, and dynamics of the mapati tradition in society. The study employs a qualitative ethnographic approach through participant observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The results indicate that mapati represents an acculturation between Islam and Javanese culture reflected in theological, ritual, and social dimensions. Theologically, the community relates this practice to religious teachings on fetal development. Ritually, cultural elements are adjusted to align with Islamic values without eliminating the traditional structure. Socially, the tradition strengthens solidarity and community cohesion. The discussion reveals processes of dialogue and adaptation among groups, allowing the tradition to remain relevant and to reflect an inclusive and contextual form of Islam
