Abstract

Sports in Indonesia have long been viewed as a tool for fostering national unity, but this often comes at the expense of certain ethnic, regional, or cultural groups. This paper explores how Indonesian sports both promote national identity and sometimes reinforce exclusionary practices. It examines how sports narratives, media coverage, and major events shape perceptions of national belonging, often sidelining minority groups or reinforcing regional divides. The paper critically analyzes the impact of nationalist sentiments in sports on social justice, focusing on the representation and treatment of marginalized communities. It also explores the role of sports in creating inclusive national identities and proposes policies for ensuring that sports are used as a tool for unity without perpetuating exclusion.
