Abstract

The security of valuable items and important documents requires an access control mechanism that can reduce the risk of unauthorized entry. This study aims to design and implement a two-step verification security system for a Safe Deposit Box (SDB) using a 4×4 keypad and RFID RC522. An Arduino Nano is used as the main controller, an LCD 16×2 provides system information, a relay functions as an electronic switch, and a solenoid door lock serves as the locking mechanism. Authentication is performed sequentially: the user first enters a password through the keypad and, when the password is correct, presents a registered RFID card for the second verification. The research stages include planning, hardware and software design, implementation, and functional testing. Testing covers the power supply, keypad and password input, password response time, RFID reading, RFID reading distance, relay and solenoid operation, LCD display, two-step authentication, and overall system response time. The results show that keypad and RFID functional tests each achieved a 100% success rate. RFID reading was relatively stable at 1–7 cm, became unstable at 8 cm, and failed at 9–10 cm. The average password authentication response time was 0.407 seconds, while the overall system response time was 0.895 seconds. The relay and solenoid operated according to the authentication condition, and the solenoid opened only when both the password and RFID were valid. The findings indicate that the proposed two-step verification system can perform the intended access-control function and provide an additional authentication layer for a Safe Deposit Box.
