Abstract

The ability to write in English is a vital skill that students need to succeed in their academic work, professional careers, and international interactions. The research investigates how HelloTalk, a social media-based language-learning platform, affects the writing abilities and opinions of 20 EFL students at Universitas Muslim Indonesia. The research design applied a quantitative pre- and post-test design to evaluate students' writing abilities using IELTS mock-up tests and closed-ended questionnaires that measured their perceptions across four domains: Technology, Cognitive, Contextual, and Linguistic. The participants followed a four-week program that included HelloTalk activities, such as Moments, for posting and conversing with native or proficient speakers and for providing feedback to their peers. The Wilcoxon test results showed that participants achieved a significant improvement in their writing band scores (p < 0.05), as evidenced by more effective use of vocabulary and more organised, easier-to-understand written texts. Pearson correlation analysis indicated strong positive relationships between contextual engagement and cohesion, and between technological engagement and lexical resource development, whereas improvements in grammar accuracy were limited. This study reveals that HelloTalk may be the most useful way to improve as an EFL writer and should be used with form-based teaching strategies to help students meet academic writing standards.
