Abstract

Clean and Healthy Living Behavior (PHBS) is one of the Ministry of Health's priority programs in its efforts to promote and prevent various infectious diseases. Children with special needs (ABK) have different educational and developmental needs than typical children. Community service activities related to handwashing education for the health of children with special needs have been widely conducted in various places and have shown varying results. However, to date, no similar community service activities have been conducted at the SLB Yayasan Tabungan Surga. This community service activity is important to obtain a more accurate picture of handwashing education for the health of children with special needs at the SLB Yayasan Tabungan Surga. Research Method: This community service activity uses an inclusive participatory approach involving students, teachers, and parents. The implementation methods include socialization of Clean and Healthy Living Behaviors (PHBS), demonstration of the six steps of handwashing with soap, and practical training with individual or small group guidance. Educational materials, such as posters and illustrated X-banners, were designed to suit the characteristics of children with special needs (ABK). Evaluation was conducted through pre-post observations of students' handwashing skills, teacher questionnaires, and reflective discussions with school officials. Research Results: The activity was carried out at SLB Cahaya Qur'an, involving 31 children. The activity consisted of education, demonstrations, and guidance on the 6-step hand washing practice using visual media. Evaluation results showed an increase in independence: before the activity, only 10 children were independent (not fully), while after the activity, 9 children were fully independent, 15 were partially independent, and only 7 still required assistance. This program effectively improved the handwashing skills of children with special needs. Conclusions and Recommendations: Evaluation results indicate that children’s abilities have improved after receiving guidance, demonstrations, and instructions.  Before the activity, most children did not know how to wash their hands independently or did not perform the steps correctly. After the activity, more children could wash their hands independently using the six standard steps, but some still required guidance.
