Abstract

Communication patterns play a crucial role in supporting the sustainability of fisheries businesses, particularly among coastal communities that still rely on cooperation and information exchange for their fishing activities. The purpose of this study was to identify communication patterns among fishermen, examine various obstacles faced in existing fisheries businesses, and analyze the contribution of communication patterns to fisheries business productivity in coastal communities. This study used a qualitative descriptive approach conducted in the coastal area of Batu Besar, Nongsa District. Data were obtained through field observations and in-depth interviews with fishermen, which were then analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive analysis model, which includes data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that communication among fishermen took place informally and interpersonally through direct interaction to exchange information on weather conditions, fishing seasons, fishing experiences, and various obstacles faced in running a fisheries business. Communication was also used as a means of deliberation to discuss solutions to various problems, including plans to form fishermen's groups, cooperatives, and legal arrangements to gain broader access to government programs. The research findings indicate that fisheries business productivity is influenced not only by technical factors but also by the quality of communication that can strengthen coordination, build understanding, and encourage cooperation among fishermen. Therefore, strengthening communication among fishermen and improving communication with the government are crucial steps in supporting the sustainability and productivity of fisheries businesses in coastal communities.
