Abstract

Abstract: Tadao Ando is a Japanese architect widely known for his architectural works that explore materials, geometry, and interactions with nature to create a spatial experience for its users. Although Ando is known as one of the architects with modern principles, his architectural thoughts and works still show individual characters, originality, connection to local tradition, and creativity in using modern architecture principles. This paper explores Ando's efforts to reconcile the principles of modernism and tradition in his architecture. In so doing, the discussion uses a phenomenological perspective built upon literature, interview, and analysis of his architectural works. The result shows that there is a reconciliation between modern and traditional values, which are predominantly represented through the application of concrete and clear compositions while maintaining building interaction with nature. Keywords: Tadao Ando; modern architecture; tradition; phenomenology.

Abstract

Conservation theory is determined by the concept of memory. Collective memory is an accumulation of events remembered by a group who shared and involved in shaping the memory. It plays an important role to articulate meaning that relevant to the current context, needs, and agenda. In old quarter of Jakarta, the concept of memory was produced as a collective effort to reconstruct Kampung Kunir which had been evicted in 2015. With its strategic location, it is impossible to exclude the revitalization of Kota Tua to its enclave surrounding. The community surrounding Kota Tua experiencing a conflict of inclusion when the revitalization process begun. Kota Tua has become tourism object while, in reality, it is surrounded by kampungs, creating a distance between the local residents and Kota Tua. After the eviction of Kampung Kunir, the government create a program to reconstruct the settlement for several families who resist to live there. A group of architect, ASF-Indonesia, was involve in facilitating physical and historical mapping, and projecting the new Kampung Kunir. Thus the reconstruction of Kampung Kunir can be seen as an effort from the community to redefine conservation and question for whom the conservation is. This paper seeks to elucidate how collective memory plays as an important aspect to conserve historical sites.

Abstract

Abstract—The aim of this study is to elaborate the conserving Kali Pasir Jami’ Mosque in Tangerang City, Banten Province that includes the participation of local communities. There is an initial conservation program proposed by the local government but it is not yet clear of how should the collaboration between communities who have done practical conservation and local government who slowly plans the conservation program. The lack of historical documentation of the building and unstructured research done by communities imply a potential threat to the conservation effort and loss of historical values of the mosque. This paper is the result of both qualitative and quantitative approaches such as observation and in-depth interviews in analyzing the conservation of the mosque. The finding of the research shows the important role of local communities in the sustainability of the mosque although there is also an urge to involve experts and government to create the right strategy in conserving the mosque. Keywords—conservation, Kali Pasir Jami’ Mosque, preservation

Abstract

This paper aims to investigate the negotiation between the “formal” and the “informal” urban space in Jakarta through the examination of use of space of marginalized transportation of bajaj – a three-wheeled public transportation. Bajaj drivers continuously and creatively create their use of space and territory as the result of the limitation of space. Creativity in using space emerges as a way to get available space and this activity results in the appropriation of urban space. The basis of such appropriation is how to survive in urban space and such condition is characterized by negotiation, flexibility and adaptability. In high-density Jakarta city, it is necessary for bajaj drivers – who have only limited possibility in using strategic urban space – to use both the formal and the informal to sustain the city at large. An analysis of how bajaj drivers negotiated urban spaces around Manggarai Station reveals the appropriation of urban space that relies on temporality, tactics and negotiation of rules of access among users. In this paper, we analyze how urban informality as an ‘organizing logic’ results in a specific mode of the production of space. The analysis of negotiations of space around Manggarai Station is intended to contribute to an understanding of how informal and negotiated spaces, which shape everyday life in the city, are inseparable parts of formal and designed spaces in the city of Jakarta.

Abstract

The physical change of Sarinah in 2022 captivates the residents of Jakarta. In the previous era, this building had lost its glory due to the lack of focused planning for renovations, especially when Jakarta's development accelerated with the presence of many new modern buildings. This writing uses a qualitative descriptive method with a historical approach. The analysis of architectural typology on the building facade is conducted by exploring the history to find out the origin of events, functions, and simple forms of a building. The aim is to provide an overview of the importance of giving more attention to the renovation of historic buildings. Changes in building facades can show a different identity from one urban space related to the political and socio-cultural context. Determination of cultural heritage status provides benefits for its preservation by increasing the potential of buildings to revive memories and the continuity of urban modernism.

Abstract

The romantic perception of vernacular architecture, often rooted in nostalgia, significantly influences its use as a symbol of cultural identity. Referring to the works of Paul Oliver and Robert Redfield on vernacular architecture, exploring romanticism and attitudes towards vernacular buildings as well as the differences between them. Tobong, a tower structure for brick burning, and Hotel Balairung in Jakarta are examples of two buildings related to vernacular architecture that can symbolize culture and society and the romance of the past. Rooted in local production traditions, Tobong transcends its functional purpose to become a symbol of cultural heritage and the significance of vernacular architecture to this day. Similarly, Hotel Balairung represents the adaptation of the vernacular architecture and culture of West Sumatra, which can symbolize regional pride and economic development. How vernacular structures like Tobong being made into monuments and Hotel Balairung represent the cultural significance and adaptability of vernacular architecture, my argument is that both vernacular architecture buildings, Tobong being made into a monument in Godean Yogyakarta and West Sumatra architecture being used as a hotel in Jakarta, show variations of the significance and adaptability of vernacular architecture in the present era. Through a comparison method of two buildings that elevate vernacular architecture, this article shows the connection between vernacular buildings and their cultural identity, as well as their ability to be used in various contexts of adaptability, and significance in shaping communitiesKeywords: sentiment, vernacular architecture, monument, culture, identity

Abstract

Traditional life in Indonesia is significantly related to spoken culture from the older generation to the young age. This condition unconsciously shows a risk of void space when there is a disconnected generation. Only a small number of written documentation and drawings exist for Vernacular Architecture in Indonesia or Architecture Nusantara. Tazo is one of several villages in Riung district, Flores island, in Nusa Tenggara Timur province, Indonesia. The current condition of the traditional house of Tazo is extinct, and there are no physical traces anymore. In this paper, we will show the excavation of the traditional house of the Tazo with the method of searching for data through oral interviews with existing traditional elders who have experienced living in their traditional house before. Step by step, the shape of this traditional house is illustrated architecturally and can be recognized again by the memory of the traditional elders of Kampung Tazo.

Abstract

This article discusses a participatory design project that aims at creating a collaborative design among architectural students, visitors, and zoo management in designing street furniture and selfie spots in city zoos. Participatory design is used in the design process to get the users’ and designers’ interpretation of the space, improve design outcomes, and increase the community awareness of their surroundings. As part of the Universitas Indonesia Community Engagement Program, the zoo design project fosters a collaborative design between the university and zoo community and supports the educational, conservational, and recreational goals of Ragunan Zoo in Jakarta. Designing street furniture and selfie spots can hopefully be parts of improving the quality of public space in the zoo. Students and lecturers who usually have limited opportunity to collaborate now have a chance to interact with visitors and the zoo management during the research and design stages while visitors actively collaborate in informing their needs and perception of the space. The zoo management also provides information on their goals and missions so that students can develop and convert the education, conservation, and recreation goals of the zoo into designs. In conclusion, the participatory design approach applied in the zoo design not only allows students to deal with real-life issues in design but also enhances space quality through community participation.
