Abstract

Situationship is becoming increasingly popular among emerging adults, who tend to choose being in a situationship over long-term relationships. Previous research has defined situationship in various ways, creating a blurred boundary between friendship, situationship, and dating relationships. This study aims to explore perceptions of emerging adults in Indonesia and their definitions related to situationships. This study uses a qualitative approach involving 7 participants, consisting of 3 males and 4 females aged 19-21 years. Participants were selected through purposive sampling, and data were collected using open-ended questionnaires and semi structured interviews with an instrumental case study research design. The results show that participants' definitions of situationship and the impact of engaging in this kind of relationship influence their views on situationships. It can be concluded that emerging adults with a positive view tend to re-engage on a situationship because they receive affection without demands from their partners. This means that more people are ignoring religious norms and social values, supporting the perception that marriage or serious relationships are no longer the ultimate goal of romantic relationships. Conversely, those with a negative view tend not to engage in a situationship again because it presents several disadvantages. This study also found that the positive impact of situationship includes receiving affection without seriousness and commitment, while the negative impact includes the emergence of negative emotions. Future research can deepen the analysis of participants' backgrounds as one of the aspects influencing their views on situationship.
