Abstract

Throughout jazz music history, jazz musicians have shown their abilities to ingest other music idioms for a change. It resulted in the transformation and fluidity in the boundaries of jazz music. Continuing this tradition, Sri Hanuraga, in his new album ”” The Unvarying Fragments of Light ”” tried to explore and comprehend the music surrounding him, such as classical music, minimalist, electronic, pop, rock, and archipelago music. In this album, the exploration was fully interwoven into the composition of “The Unity of Opposites.” This research discusses the musical approach of Sri Hanuraga in his composition “The Unity of Opposites” in terms of melody, harmony, rhythm, and form. Moreover, this research also elaborates on the sound design approach of Kevin Leonardo, which is an integral part of the narrative composition of Sri Hanuraga. Sepanjang sejarah musik jazz, musisi jazz telah menunjukkan kemampuannya menelan idiom musik lain demi pembaruan. Hal ini mengakibatkan  perubahan dan cairnya batas-batas musik jazz. Melanjutkan tradisi tersebut, Sri Hanuraga, pada album terbarunya ””The Unvarying Fragments of Light ”” mencoba mengeksplor dan memahami keterlemparannya di tengah musik yang mengelilinginya, seperti musik klasik, minimalis, elektronik, pop, rock dan musik nusantara. Dalam album tersebut ekpslorasi yang dimaksud terjalin secara utuh dalam komposisi “The Unity of Opposites.” Penelitian ini membahas pendekatan bermusik Sri Hanuraga pada komposisi “The Unity of Opposites” dalam aspek melodi, harmoni, ritme dan bentuk. Selain itu, penelitian ini juga akan menjabarkan pendekatan sound design Kevin Leonardo yang menjadi bagian tak terpisahkan dari narasi komposisi Sri Hanuraga.

Abstract

In general, piano and guitar duets in jazz focus on exploring the melody, harmony, rhythm, and interaction between players. It resulted in the duet jazz piano and guitar albums that tend to sound identical. To avoid this, Gerald Situmorang and Sri Hanuraga, in the song “Hyperreality” (from the META album) focused on the exploration of the timbre aspect to enrich their exploration of melody, harmony, and rhythm. This study discusses the musical approach of Gerald Situmorang and Sri Hanuraga in the song “Hyperreality” in terms of melody, harmonization, and rhythm of the song. Moreover, this study also describes the use of prepared piano, guitar effects, and DAW by Gerald Situmorang and Sri Hanuraga in the song “Hyperreality”. Permainan duet piano dan gitar dalam musik jazz umumnya berfokus pada eksplorasi melodi, harmoni, ritme dan interaksi antar pemain. Hal ini mengakibatkan album duet jazz piano dan gitar cenderung berbunyi identik. Untuk menghindari hal itu, Pada lagu “Hyperreality” dari album META Gerald Situmorang dan Sri Hanuraga, Sri Hanuraga dan Gerald Situmorang menitikberatkan eksplorasi mereka kepada aspek timbre untuk memperkaya eksplorasi melodi, harmoni dan ritme mereka. Penelitian ini membahas pendekatan bermusik Gerald Situmorang dan Sri Hanuraga pada lagu “Hyperreality” dalam aspek melodi, harmonisasi dan ritme dari lagu. Selain itu penelitian ini juga akan menjabarkan menjabarkan penggunaan prepared piano, efek gitar dan DAW oleh Gerald Situmorang dan Sri Hanuraga di lagu “Hyperreality”.

Abstract

The creation of musical compositions can be inspired by various motifs, both musical and extra-musical. The composition entitled “The Lovers” is a work by Sri Hanuraga, written for Josh Marcy’s dance piece of the same name. Marcy’s work is a collage of romantic imagery that finds its meaning through a disruption of traditional notions of romance. This paper outlines Hanuraga’s strategies for concretely translating the discourse presented by Marcy into musical material.
