Abstract

This article discusses the renewal movement of Islamic thought that occurred in the 19th and early 20th centuries in Egypt. This movement aims to return Islam to its pure roots, by eliminating practices or beliefs that are deemed not derived from the Quran and Sunnah. This article examines the history and development of this movement, as well as its impact on Islamic society in Egypt. Intellectual and academic figures such as Muhammad Ali Pasya, Al-Tahtawi, Muhammad Abduh and Rashid Ridha played a very important role in this renewal. Apart from that, this article also discusses the importance of education and research in Islam, which led to the emergence of Islamic universities in Egypt. Through analysis of data from various sources, this article shows that the movement for renewal of Islamic thought in Egypt has made a significant contribution to the development of Islamic thought and society in that country.
