Abstract

The usage of stem cells in the medical field offers significant potential for treating various degenerative diseases. However, it also sparks debates surrounding ethics and legal considerations, particularly within the context of Islam. This article aims to explore the use of stem cells from an Islamic ethical and legal perspective, focusing on ethically and halal-sourced stem cells. Adult stem cells and those from the umbilical cord are considered more acceptable from an ethical and Shariah standpoint, while the use of embryonic stem cells raises more complex moral issues. The principle of necessity (dharurah) in Islamic law allows for exceptions in certain cases, but strict conditions must still be met. This article seeks to provide guidance for Muslims from various backgrounds on the use of stem cell technology that aligns with Islamic principles.
