Abstract

Translating an old travel book for contemporary readers gives specific challenges. Words, proper names, goverment, culture and geography may have changed from the time it was told in the book. This article reports a practitioner research in translating such a book, entitled A Visit to Java by W. Basil Worsfold from English into Indonesian. The umbrella method used was Design and Development Research (DDR), consisting of five stages: analysis, design, development, implementation, and revision. The design process was also supported by a pre-translation analysis. The researcher employed many strategies including adding footnotes.  The research findings indicate that the final translation was acceptable and understandable based on expert validation and field testing. The footnotes were also considered helpful in explaining historical and cultural terms. Several minor mistranslations and inaccuracies were identified during field testing and were corrected in the revision process. In conclusion, the Indonesian translation of A Visit to Java can function as an additional tourism-related resource for Indonesian tourism practitioners and students, particularly in understanding the historical, cultural, and tourism content of Java while maintaining the meaning and writing style of the original book.
