Abstract

Abstract

Free radicals can damage body cells through the oxidation process. Antioxidants are compounds that can neutralize free radicals and prevent cell damage. One that has antioxidant activity is the insulin plant (Smallanthus soncifolius) with compounds that act as antioxidants, namely flavonoids and phenols. This study aims to determine the effect of solvents on the antioxidant activity of insulin leaves. The method of testing antioxidant activity is DPPH and ABTS with aquadest, 50% ethanol, and 96% ethanol solvents for the extraction process. Samples of DPPH Aquadest (DA), DPPH ethanol 50% (DE50), DPPH Ethanol 96% (DE96), ABTS Aquadest (AA), ABTS Ethanol 50% (AE50) and ABTS 96% (AE96) were obtained. The test results obtained were AA (12.13 ppm), AE50 (16.24 ppm), AE96 (18.91 ppm), DA (21.40 ppm), DE50 (22.29 ppm), and DE96 (25.06 ppm). It can be concluded that the selection of solvents affects the antioxidant activity of insulin leaves (Smallanthus sonchifolius). Aquadest solvent has the best antioxidant activity (p <0.05)

Abstract

Staphylococcus aureus is the bacteria that causes the most cases of infection in the world. Most infectious disease therapy in Indonesia uses antibiotics. Incorrect use of antibiotics can increase resistance. One of the plants that has the potential as an alternative treatment for infections is suji leaves. The purpose of this study was to determine the potential of suji leaf extract and fraction on antibacterial activity in Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 bacteria. Samples were extracted using the maceration method with 70% ethanol solvent and then fractionated using n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and water solvents. Phytochemical tests were carried out to determine alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, saponins, polyphenols, triterpenoids and steroids. Antibacterial activity tests of suji leaf extracts and fractions were carried out using the well method at concentrations of 5%, 10%, and 15% respectively with a negative control of 70% ethanol and a positive control of ciprofloxacin. Suji leaf extracts and fractions contain alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, saponins, steroids, and polyphenols. The extract, n-hexane fraction, and ethyl acetate fraction of suji leaves have antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 bacteria. The inhibitory activity against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 bacteria was greatest in the ethyl acetate fraction at a concentration of 15% with an average inhibition zone of 19.6 mm but was not equivalent to the inhibition of the positive control ciprofloxacin

Abstract

Rosemary leaves contain essential oil compounds that have antibacterial and anti-inflammatory activities. The main components of essential oils are α-pinene, 1,8-cineole, camphene, kmafer, sabinene, bornyl acetate linalool. The cream formulation was chosen because of its more practical use. This study aims to obtain a formula for a rosemary leaf essential oil cream preparation as a treatment for rabbit back skin infections and antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus. Isolation of essential oils was obtained using the water distillation extraction method. Anti-inflammatory activity testing was carried out by infecting the injured rabbit back skin and giving Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. After 24 hours, they were treated with rosemary leaf essential oil cream with concentrations of 5%, 10%, and 15%. The diffusion method was used to test the antibacterial activity of rosemary leaf essential oil cream. The results showed that the antibacterial activity of rosemary leaf essential oil cream was characterized by the formation of inhibition zones around the wells. Anti-inflammatory testing on rabbit backs showed that rosemary leaf essential oil cream with a concentration of 15% had more effective anti-inflammatory activity than concentrations of 5% and 10%.
