Abstract

Marine oil pollution is one of the most serious threats to marine ecosystems and coastal communities. Conventional oil spill response methods are often inefficient, costly, and potentially harmful to the environment. This study aims to develop ARUNA (Autonomous Remediation Unit for Oil Absorption), an Internet of Things (IoT)-based robotic system equipped with a filter made from human hair waste to effectively and environmentally absorb oil. The study employed a five-stage Research and Development (R&D) method using the Waterfall model, which consists of: (1) requirements analysis, (2) system design, (3) implementation and prototype development, (4) testing and validation, and (5) evaluation and system refinement. ARUNA utilizes an ESP8266 microcontroller for automated monitoring and control, along with sensors to detect the presence of oil on the water surface. Experimental results demonstrated a robotic system effectiveness of 90% and an average oil filtration efficiency of 85.5%, with a maximum efficiency reaching 95%. This innovation offers a renewable and sustainable solution for oil spill mitigation while simultaneously promoting environmentally responsible human hair waste management. Therefore, ARUNA has strong potential as a safer, more cost-effective, and environmentally friendly alternative for maintaining marine ecosystem sustainability.
