Abstract

This article examines the history and development of the Islamic education curriculum in Malaysia, from the period of British colonial rule to the present day. To explore these historical dynamics, this study employs a literature review of major scholarly works published in Malaysia and Indonesia that examine Islamic education in Southeast Asia. The findings reveal three main developments. First, the arrival and spread of Islam in Malaysia contributed significantly to the growing interest in Islamic religious learning among local communities. Second, Islamic education initially provided by Muslim scholars experienced a form of educational dualism following the introduction of Western-style education by the colonial authorities. This resulted in the coexistence of traditional Islamic educational practices and Western-oriented educational systems. Third, the transformation of the Malaysian curriculum from the colonial period through independence has remained influenced, to varying degrees, by Western educational orientations. These historical developments demonstrate that the evolution of Islamic education in Malaysia has been shaped by the interaction between Islamic educational traditions, colonial legacies, and broader processes of educational modernization.
