Abstract

Diarrhea remains a significant public health problem among young children and continues to contribute to morbidity worldwide, with feeding practices being recognized as important modifiable factors associated with its occurrence. This study aimed to determine the relationship between formula milk feeding and diarrhea incidence among infants and toddlers at Tanjung Kamal Community Health Post (Pustu), Mangaran, Situbondo, Indonesia. A quantitative cross-sectional study was conducted involving 36 mother–child pairs selected using a total sampling technique from May to June 2023. Data were collected through structured questionnaires and analyzed using univariate analysis and the chi-square test for bivariate analysis. The findings showed that the majority of participants were children aged 1–3 years (61.2%) and female (66.7%). Of the total participants, 58.3% (n = 21) received formula milk, while 52.8% (n = 19) experienced diarrhea. The proportion of diarrhea cases was higher among children receiving formula milk (76.2%, n = 16/21) compared with those who did not receive formula milk (20.0%, n = 3/15). Statistical analysis revealed a significant association between formula milk feeding and diarrhea incidence (χ² = 11.09, df = 1, p < 0.001), with formula-fed children having a higher risk of experiencing diarrhea (OR = 12.8; 95% CI: 2.5–64.4). These results indicate that formula milk feeding is associated with an increased incidence of diarrhea among infants and toddlers in this community setting. Promoting exclusive breastfeeding, improving maternal knowledge regarding appropriate feeding practices, and ensuring safe formula preparation are important strategies to reduce diarrhea risk among young children.
