Abstract

Effective communication is fundamental to quality healthcare, yet language barriers between nurses and patients in Indonesia's multicultural context can significantly impede service delivery and patient well-being. This quantitative descriptive study, utilizing an online survey via Google Form administered to 130 respondents, aimed to analyze the relationship between language choice in nurse-patient interactions and patient comfort levels during hospitalization. The findings revealed that 30.8% of healthcare workers continue to use regional languages instead of standardized Indonesian, potentially leading to misunderstandings. Furthermore, 15.4% of patients reported feeling uncomfortable with the services received, primarily attributing this dissatisfaction to nurses' unprofessional attitudes, perceived rudeness, indifference, and poor communication skills. These results indicate that inappropriate language use and the failure to implement therapeutic communication techniques negatively impact patient psychological comfort and overall satisfaction. The study underscores the critical need for nurses to employ clear, empathetic, and professional communication using standardized Indonesian to foster trust, enhance emotional support, and facilitate holistic healing. This research offers a novel perspective by quantitatively linking specific linguistic practices with patient psychological outcomes in Indonesian hospitals. It highlights the urgent necessity for enhanced communication training, cultural competence, and professionalism in nursing care to improve patient experiences and treatment outcomes.
