Abstract

Hypertension remains a major global and national health challenge, including in Indonesia. It is driven by both non-modifiable and modifiable risk factors. One of the primary obstacles in hypertension management is long-term medication adherence, which is significantly influenced by patient knowledge. This study aims to analyze the relationship between knowledge level and medication adherence among hypertensive patients at the Mempawah Health Center, Mempawah Regency. This quantitative study utilized a correlational design with a cross-sectional approach. A total sample of 106 hypertensive patients was selected using a purposive sampling technique based on specific inclusion criteria, including having hypertension for more than six months. Data were collected using a validated 12-item knowledge questionnaire and the 8-item Morisky Medication Adherence Scale (MMAS-8). Bivariate analysis was conducted using the Gamma correlation test. The majority of respondents were in late adulthood (45.3%), male (55.7%), had an elementary school education level (42.5%), and were unemployed/housewives (43.3%). Most respondents demonstrated a moderate level of knowledge (64.2%) and moderate medication adherence (53.8%). Statistical analysis revealed a significant relationship between knowledge level and medication adherence among hypertensive patients (p = 0.005) with a moderate positive correlation (r = 0.511). There is a significant positive relationship between the level of knowledge and adherence to taking medication among hypertensive patients at Mempawah Health Center. Enhancing public health education and targeted nursing interventions are essential to improve patient comprehension and treatment compliance
