Abstract

This study aims to examine how motivational dynamics influences farmers’ participation in digital platforms supporting community-based agrotourism. Grounded in Goal Achievement Theory, farmer’s motivations are conceptualized as dynamic and heterogeneous orientations that shape collective participation behavior. A mixed method approach was employed using a case study of the Petani Muda Keren Bali community combined with agent based modeling to simulate participation dynamics under different motivational and platform design scenarios. Farmers were categorized into mastery approach, mastery avoidance, performances approach, and performances avoidance orientations to capture variations in participation behavior over time. The findings indicate that approach oriented motivations generate higher and more stable participation dynamics, while avoidance oriented motivation contribute to slower and fragmented adoption patterns. The introduction of gamification elements alters motivational dynamics by strengthening positive interaction effects among farmers and accelerating collective participation within digital platform. The originality of the study lies in its integration of motivational theory and simulation based analysis to explain participation behavior in digital agrotourism context. The results highlight that digital platform function as social-technical systems shaped by human behavior rather than purely technological tools. Practically, the findings suggest  that platform designs sensitive to motivational diversity can enhance inclusive participation and support sustainable community based agrotourism development.
