Abstract

This study aims to analyze the practice of trading basic necessities in Lahang Hulu Village, Gaung District, Indragiri Hilir Regency, from the perspective of Islamic economic ethics. The study was motivated by the finding that trading activities in the village do not always fully reflect the principles of honesty, justice, trustworthiness, politeness, and friendliness. This research employed a qualitative field research method using a normative-empirical approach and a case study design. The research informants consisted of 12 basic necessities merchants selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation, and analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model, which includes data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that basic necessities trading in Lahang Hulu Village is conducted through both cash and credit transactions, particularly for trusted customers. In general, merchants have implemented the principles of honesty (ṣidq), justice ('adl), trustworthiness (amanah), politeness, and friendliness in their trading activities. The level of implementation of Islamic economic ethics obtained an average score of 92.5%, which falls into the very good category. Nevertheless, several aspects still require improvement, particularly transparency in providing information about product conditions and consistency in serving customers. These improvements are expected to strengthen the implementation of Islamic economic ethics and encourage fair, trustworthy, and mutually beneficial trading practices.
