Abstract

Background: Type II Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a chronic disease whose prevalence is increasing in Indonesia. Non-pharmacological treatment through a healthy diet can be an effective management alternative. One option worth considering is the use of the Prophetic diet (the dietary pattern of the Prophet Muhammad). The Prophetic diet may serve as an effective non-pharmacological therapy for Type II DM patients. This study aims to describe the perception and practice of the Prophetic diet as a non-pharmacological therapy in Type II DM patients at Gayamsari Community Health Center (Puskesmas). Methods: This study used a descriptive observational design. The sample consisted of 25 Type II DM patients at Gayamsari Community Health Center who met the inclusion criteria. The intervention consisted of education and mentoring on the Prophetic diet. Results: Based on the questionnaire results, 11 items were valid because the calculated r value was ≥ the r table value, and 1 item was invalid because the calculated r value was < the r table value. The questionnaire was also reliable, as the Cronbach's Alpha value exceeded 0.60. The description of perception and practice of the Prophetic diet as a non-pharmacological therapy in patients with Type II diabetes mellitus was assessed using a questionnaire covering 3 aspects: Practice of the Prophetic Diet (6 questions), Non-Pharmacological Therapy Aspect (4 questions), and Barriers to Implementing the Prophetic Diet (2 questions). The study found that, regarding awareness of the Prophetic diet, most respondents (19 respondents, 76%) were familiar with it. Their sources of information were healthcare workers (7 respondents, 28%) and others (7 respondents, 28%), with "others" including information obtained from books. Conclusion: The description of perception and practice of the Prophetic diet as a non-pharmacological therapy in patients with Type II diabetes mellitus at Gayamsari Community Health Center shows that there is an implementation of dietary patterns that are recommended in Islam and taught by the Prophet Muhammad SAW.
