Abstract

Stunting is a growth disorder characterized by length or height-for-age below the recommended standard. Inappropriate complementary feeding may result in inadequate nutritional intake and affect child growth. Objective this study aimed to determine the relationship between complementary feeding practices and stunting among toddlers in the working area of Seyegan Primary Health Center, Sleman. Methods this quantitative analytic observational study used a cross-sectional approach. A total of 72 toddlers aged 6–59 months participated in the study. Complementary feeding practices were assessed using a modified Child Feeding Questionnaire (CFQ), while stunting status was determined through length/height-for-age measurements using WHO Anthro. Data were analyzed using bivariate analysis. Results of 72 toddlers, 32 (44.4%) received appropriate complementary feeding and 40 (55.6%) received inappropriate complementary feeding. A total of 35 toddlers (48.6%) were stunted, consisting of 31 (43.1%) categorized as short and 4 (5.6%) as severely short, while 37 (51.4%) had normal growth status. Among toddlers receiving appropriate complementary feeding, 7 (21.9%) were stunted and 25 (78.1%) had normal growth. Among those receiving inappropriate complementary feeding, 28 (70.0%) were stunted and 12 (30.0%) had normal growth. Statistical analysis showed a significant relationship between complementary feeding practices and stunting (p = 0.000). Conclusion appropriate complementary feeding was associated with a lower proportion of stunting among toddlers.
