Abstract

The lifting system is a major component of a rough terrain crane that functions to lift and move loads therefore, it requires a structure capable of safely withstanding applied loads. This study aimed to analyze Von Mises stress, displacement, and safety factor, as well as to determine the lifting capacity limit of a rough terrain crane simulator lifting system made of Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS). The research employed the Finite Element Analysis (FEA) method using Autodesk Fusion 360 with load variations of 4.90 N, 9.81 N, and 19.61 N. The simulation results showed that increasing loads caused the maximum Von Mises stress to increase from 44.348 MPa to 177.484 MPa and the maximum displacement to increase from 36.489 mm to 146.030 mm. The minimum safety factor decreased from 0.451 to 0.113. The highest stress concentration for all loading variations occurred at the base joint area of the lifting system. The results indicated that the ABS structure did not meet the safety criteria because all loading variations produced safety factor values below 1 and working stresses exceeding the material yield strength of 20 MPa. Structural geometry optimization or the use of higher-strength materials is required to improve the lifting system’s capacity and safety.
