Abstract

This study explores the representation of the meaning of self-love in the song “Annie.” by Wave to Earth using Roland Barthes’s semiotic analysis and Stuart Hall’s theory of representation. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach, with data collection techniques including analysis of the song lyrics, interpretation of musical elements, and documentation from relevant sources related to South Korean popular culture. Data validation was conducted through source triangulation, involving interviews with experts on South Korean popular culture to ensure the accuracy of the social context framing the process of meaning-making. The results indicate that through three layers of meaning—denotation, connotation, and myth—this song represents the singer’s emotional journey in breaking free from the pressures of a materialistic lifestyle, the demands of social perfection, and the collective expectations that shape how individuals perceive themselves. At the mythical level, the song subtly critiques the culture of chemyeon (image management), social competition, and the hegemony of the Korean Wave, which imposes ideal standards of success, beauty, and self-identity. The song “Annie” thus not only conveys a personal message about self-acceptance but also offers a broader social reflection on how music can function as a medium of mass communication capable of conveying cultural criticism, strengthening emotional awareness, and opening space for the younger generation to negotiate a new understanding of the authentic meaning of self-love amid the dominance of modern social constructs.
