Abstract

Compact Heat Exchangers (CHE) are commonly used in various industries. Therefore, enhancing the performance of heat exchangers is crucial, one of which is by adding fins to the outer surface. This study focuses on the effect of fin spacing configuration on the heat transfer rate and overall heat transfer coefficient. The heat exchanger studied has sharp bends with a passage length of 300 mm, a bend length of 82 mm, and a total passage length of 5960 mm. The inner diameter of the tube (Di) is 20 mm, and the outer diameter of the tube (Do) is 22 mm. The type of fin used is a circular fin with a thickness of 0.3 mm and a fin height of 10 mm. The fin spacing variations are 20 mm, 30 mm, 40 mm, 50 mm, 60 mm, and 70 mm. The working fluid is water at a temperature of 80°C, and heat transfer occurs as air passes through the heat exchanger at varying air velocities of 1.4 m/s, 2.1 m/s, and 2.4 m/s. The study results indicate that fin spacing significantly affects the heat exchanger's performance. The fin spacing of 50 mm was found to be optimal, with an average increase in the overall heat transfer rate of 1147 W at an air velocity of 1.4 m/s, 1212 W at an air velocity of 2.1 m/s, and 1272 W at an air velocity of 2.4 m/s. In addition, the overall heat transfer coefficient also increased by 73.6 W/m²K at an air velocity of 1.4 m/s, 77.8 W/m²K at an air velocity of 2.1 m/s, and 82.1 W/m²K at an air velocity of 2.4 m/s.
