Abstract

Pancasila occupies a fundamental position in Indonesia’s constitutional order because it simultaneously serves as the state foundation, ideological orientation, source of constitutional values, and ethical reference for public life. Nevertheless, Pancasila education and discourse are often reduced to normative and memorization-based approaches, leaving insufficient explanation of why Pancasila must continuously be examined epistemically and contextually. This article analyzes the urgency of studying Pancasila as the foundation of the state through four principal dimensions—juridical, historical, sociological, and political—and discusses its relevance to contemporary democracy, plurality, globalization, and digital transformation. The study employs an integrative literature review of 25 academic sources prioritized from Scopus-indexed journals and/or Indonesian journals accredited in SINTA 1-3, complemented by an examination of the 1945 Constitution of the Republic of Indonesia and relevant legislation. Data were analyzed through identification, categorization, comparison, and thematic synthesis. The review shows that juridically, Pancasila is positioned as the source of all sources of state law; historically, it represents a national consensus emerging from intellectual and political struggles toward independence; sociologically, it articulates values of religiosity, humanity, mutual cooperation, deliberation, and social justice rooted in Indonesian society; and politically, it provides a normative framework for constitutional democracy, national integration, and the management of diversity. Accordingly, the study of Pancasila should move beyond memorization toward critical, contextual, and applicable ideological literacy
