Abstract

The production facility layout at UMKM Dodol Putri Langkat is currently considered suboptimal because the arrangement of work stations does not follow the production process sequence systematically. This condition causes irregular process flows, long material movement distances, and increases non-value-added material handling activities. This research aims to redesign the production facility layout to be more efficient in order to minimize total material movement distance and material handling costs. The methodology used is Systematic Layout Planning (SLP) and the Graphic method. Data analysis was carried out in depth through the creation of an Operation Process Chart (OPC) to understand the production flow, as well as the use of a From To Chart (FTC) to calculate the amount of material movement. The closeness relationship between work stations was evaluated using an Activity Relationship Chart (ARC) and visualized through an Activity Relationship Diagram (ARD). Based on the research results, the initial layout had an FTC value of 8,254. After redesigning, the proposed layout using the Systematic Layout Planning (SLP) method produced the most efficient FTC value of 2,641, which is smaller than the Graphic method result of 3,483. This proves that the implementation of the SLP method can provide significant improvements with a drastic reduction in material movement distance. This design results in a more organized and systematic production process flow, and is able to increase operational effectiveness at UMKM Dodol Putri Langkat.
