Abstract

Flank wear is one of the primary concerns in machining processes, especially in CNC milling, as it directly affects tool life, machining efficiency, and the surface quality of workpieces. This study aims to analyze the effect of cutting parameters on the wear rate of carbide insert tools (Sandvik R245-12T3 M-PM 530) when machining DIN 1.2311 material using a 2008 CNC milling machine (DMTG XD-40A). The parameters tested include cutting speed (Vc), feed per tooth (fz), and toolpath. The Taguchi method with an L9 orthogonal array was used to determine the optimal parameter combination. ANOVA was used to evaluate the contribution of each factor, while the coefficient of determination (R²) was applied to assess model accuracy and detect structural instability of the CNC machine’s table. The results show that cutting speed was the most dominant factor contributing 75.54% to tool wear, followed by toolpath at 20.63%, and feed per tooth at 2.51%. The minimum observed tool wear was 0.10575 mm, achieved using 260 m/min cutting speed, one-way toolpath, and 0.08 mm/rev feed rate. The regression model yielded an R² value of 92,31%, indicating high model reliability and its ability to reflect potential mechanical instability in the machine's construction due to aging. These findings are expected to guide industrial applications in optimizing machining conditions, extending tool life, and improving productivity, particularly when using modern cutting tools on older CNC machines.
