Abstract

The national transmigration program has not only triggered population mobility but has also driven cultural shifts and integration in destination areas. This research is backed by the phenomenon of the survival of the terbangan art, a religious tradition originating from Java, which thrives within a heterogeneous community in Aceh. This study aims to deeply examine the cultural dynamics, forms of acculturation, and musical structures of the terbangan art among the people of Jati Rejo Village, Nagan Raya Regency. The method used is a qualitative approach with a comprehensive case study design. Field data collection was conducted over three months through a triangulation of methods including passive participatory observation, documentation, and semi-structured interviews with art practitioners and local custom leaders, which were then analyzed using an interactive model. The research findings show that the terbangan art at the research site has undergone a unique cultural domestication process through the stages of internalization, socialization, and enculturation. A concrete form of acculturation is clearly reflected in the traditional Acehnese wedding ritual (intat linto), where the beats of terbangan music are adopted as the primary accompaniment for the groom while maintaining the authenticity of the Javanese musical structure and the lyrics from the Berzanji Book. The implication of this study confirms that the terbangan art functions not only as an aesthetic medium and Islamic da'wah but also acts as an instrument to glue inter-ethnic social cohesion. Adaptive socialization efforts are required to overcome the slow regeneration of art practitioners due to digital modernization in the future.
