Abstract

Diabetes Mellitus is one of the most common chronic diseases among older adults and may lead to various serious complications if not properly managed. Knowledge of Diabetes Mellitus plays an important role in supporting healthy lifestyle behaviors, including maintaining a balanced diet, engaging in regular physical activity, adhering to medication, and undergoing routine health check-ups. Elderly integrated health service posts (Posyandu Lansia) have a strategic role in providing health education to improve older adults’ understanding of diabetes prevention and management. This study aims to determine the relationship between knowledge of Diabetes Mellitus and healthy lifestyle behaviors among older adults at the Elderly Posyandu of Samudera Community Health Center, North Aceh. The study employed a quantitative method with a descriptive-analytic design and a cross-sectional approach. The population consisted of all elderly participants attending Posyandu activities within the working area of the Samudera Community Health Center. Data were collected using questionnaires measuring respondents’ knowledge of Diabetes Mellitus and healthy lifestyle behaviors. The results showed that most elderly participants had good knowledge of Diabetes Mellitus and demonstrated relatively good healthy lifestyle behaviors. Older adults with higher levels of knowledge were more likely to maintain healthy eating habits, engage in physical activities, and routinely monitor their blood glucose levels. The study concludes that knowledge of Diabetes Mellitus serves as an important supporting factor for healthy lifestyle behaviors among older adults.
