Abstract

Kesenian Irama Minang is a traditional game and entertainment practice developed within Minangkabau society and commonly performed at wedding celebrations. Besides providing recreation, KIM functions as a medium of social interaction and local cultural preservation. However, its use of numbers, prizes, and elements of chance raises questions regarding its legal status under Islamic law, particularly in relation to maisir (gambling). This study examines the legal status of KIM performances at Minangkabau wedding celebrations from the perspective of Islamic law. A qualitative approach using library research was employed. Data were obtained from the Qur’an, hadith, classical Islamic jurisprudence books, scholarly articles, and other relevant sources concerning KIM, 'urf (custom), and maisir. Data were analyzed through qualitative content analysis using a normative approach. The findings show that the legal status of KIM depends on its implementation mechanism, particularly the source of prizes, the presence of stakes, and wealth transfer among participants. KIM conducted solely for entertainment, without participant fees or stakes and with prizes provided by organizers or sponsors, does not fulfill the essential elements of maisir and is therefore permissible. Conversely, KIM involving participant stakes, chance-based prizes, and wealth transfer from losers to winners contains elements of maisir and is prohibited. Thus, KIM may be preserved as local cultural practice when implemented consistently with Islamic legal principles.
