Abstract

This study aims to examine the relationship between self-esteem and body image among adolescents who are active users of social media. The main focus is to determine how levels of self-esteem influence individuals’ perceptions of their bodies within the context of digital media exposure that promotes idealized beauty standards. This research employed a quantitative correlational design involving 145 adolescents aged 18–22 years who actively use social media. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling. Data were collected using the Self-esteem Scale (16 items, α = .953) and the Body Image Scale (34 items, α = .979). Data analysis was conducted using the Spearman Rank correlation test with SPSS software. The results revealed a positive and significant correlation between self-esteem and body image (r = .940; p = .000). Most participants had high self-esteem (5.3%) and moderate body image (64.1%), indicating that higher self-esteem contributes to a more positive body image among adolescents. These findings highlight the importance of psychosocial interventions focusing on self-esteem enhancement, such as self-acceptance counseling and digital literacy training, to mitigate the negative effects of social media on adolescents’ body image. This study contributes to the social psychology literature by providing empirical evidence on the relationship between self-esteem and body image within the collectivist cultural context of Indonesian adolescents.
