Abstract

Slum settlements remain a significant challenge in urban spatial management, particularly in areas adjacent to industrial activities and vulnerable to environmental pressures. This study aims to describe the characteristics and degree of slum conditions in the Bromo Island settlement, Mantuil Subdistrict, Banjarmasin City. The research employed a descriptive quantitative approach supported by qualitative data obtained through field observations, interviews with neighborhood association (Rukun Tetangga/RT) leaders and local residents, and a review of secondary data from relevant government agencies. The results indicate that the settlement exhibits various indicators of slum conditions, including inadequate building conditions, neighborhood roads with an average width of only 1.5 meters, and houses entirely constructed over water bodies, increasing environmental and public health risks. Sanitation facilities also fail to meet required standards; septic tanks are unavailable, domestic wastewater is discharged directly into the surrounding water bodies, and solid waste management remains suboptimal. In addition, some drainage channels are non-functional, and fire protection facilities are unavailable. Based on an assessment of the technical indicators, the area is classified as a moderately slum settlement, indicating the need for spatial upgrading and the provision of basic infrastructure to reduce environmental vulnerability and improve the quality of life of the local community.
