Abstract

Language shift is a contemporary sociolinguistic occurrence emerging from linguistic interaction in varied urban academic settings. This research intends to characterize the shift from utilizing the Dayak Ahe language to the Pontianak Malay dialect among migrant learners at the UPGRI Pontianak Campus. Employing a descriptive approach in sociolinguistics, linguistic data were thoroughly gathered via documentation of WhatsApp instant messaging and semi-structured interviews. The analysis of data utilized the interactive model of Miles and Huberman, encompassing data collection, data reduction, data display, and drawing conclusions. The findings show that Dayak Ahe-speaking students exhibit language convergence and alteration by incorporating vocabulary, pronunciations, intonations, and unique emphatic elements of the Pontianak Malay dialect in both spoken and online interactions at the university. This change is motivated by favorable views of the urban dialect and practical reasons to address linguistic insecurity. This change in language does not diminish their authentic ethnic identity; instead, it acts as a cultural link and a social adaptation method to ensure effective.
