Abstract

Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR) is still a serious public health issue in Indonesia, even though it is a priority for the Ministry of Health, and current efforts have not reached the desired results. This study contributed by developing a maternal mortality prediction model for Lampung Province using a case–control design with 193 participants: 96 maternal death cases selected by total sampling and 97 controls matched for residence, age, and willingness to participate. Data were collected through structured interviews conducted by trained staff and analyzed using binary logistic regression to identify key predictors of maternal mortality. The results showed that poor maternal health status increased the risk of death by more than three times (AOR = 3.144), and poor maternal health behavior doubled the risk (AOR = 2.066). Multivariate analysis supported the findings, which align with McCarthy and Maine’s theory, which highlights health status and behavior as direct factors affecting maternal mortality. Based on these results, the study recommends strengthening interventions to improve maternal health, especially through anemia screening and prevention, and to improve maternal and family health behaviors through focused health education to help reduce maternal mortality.
