Abstract

Improper disposal of waste cooking oil contributes to environmental pollution and reflects limited public awareness of sustainable household waste management. This community service program aimed to educate and empower housewives in Sumber Rejo Village, Banyuasin Regency, Indonesia, to utilize waste cooking oil in producing environmentally friendly dishwashing soap with economic value. The program employed a participatory community empowerment approach consisting of preparation, implementation, and evaluation stages. The activities included educational sessions on the environmental impacts of waste cooking oil disposal, practical training in dishwashing soap production, and basic entrepreneurship guidance to encourage small-scale business opportunities. Data were collected through pre-test and post-test assessments, direct observation, and evaluation of participants’ practical performance. The results showed a substantial increase in participants’ awareness of the environmental hazards of waste cooking oil, from 35% before the program to 95% after the training. In addition, participants’ practical skills in producing dishwashing soap improved from 10% to 75%. The dishwashing soap produced during the training demonstrated good physical properties and effectively removed grease from kitchen utensils. In conclusion, the program successfully enhanced environmental awareness, improved practical skills, and promoted community-based economic opportunities, while supporting Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12 on responsible consumption and production.
