Abstract

The openness of mental health discussions in digital media has encouraged the use of more indirect and subtle language to convey sensitive psychological experiences. This study aims to describe the meanings of euphemisms in Raditya Dika’s YouTube discourse on mental health and to explain the semantic processes underlying such representations. This study employs a qualitative descriptive method with a contextual semantic approach based on Allan and Burridge’s theory of euphemism. The data consist of 25 euphemistic utterances obtained from five videos uploaded to the Raditya Dika YouTube channel in 2023–2024. The data were collected through observation and note-taking techniques and then analyzed by identifying literal and contextual meanings, determining shifts in meaning, and classifying the data based on their semantic characteristics. The results reveal six categories of euphemistic meaning: psychological metaphor, avoidance of clinical terminology, emotional generalization, intensity reduction, social normalization, and neutral substitution. Psychological metaphor is the most dominant category, accounting for eight data points. These findings indicate that euphemisms in YouTube discourse represent mental health as a personal and reflective experience rather than merely as a clinical condition. Theoretically, this study contributes to the semantic study of euphemism in digital media, particularly in Indonesian-language mental health discourse.
