Abstract

Inadequately controlled pain can decrease patients' quality of life. Medication adherence is one of the key determinants of successful pain management. A low level of knowledge will lead to non-adherence. The majority of postoperative patients experience moderate to severe pain, making the evaluation of painkiller medication adherence in this population important. This study aims to determine the relationship between the level of knowledge and adherence to taking painkiller medication among postoperative patients at Sultan Agung Islamic Hospital Semarang. The adherence variable investigated refers to the respondents' history of compliance with painkiller medication, even before the surgery. This research is an observational analytic study using a cross-sectional design. Sampling was conducted using a consecutive sampling technique involving 62 respondents consisting of postoperative patients on their second or third day. The research instruments used were a Guttman-scaled knowledge questionnaire and a Likert-scaled adherence questionnaire, which had been tested for validity and reliability. Data analysis utilized the descriptive mode test and the Kendall’s tau-b bivariate correlation test. The results showed that the majority of respondents had a good level of knowledge (62.9%) with a moderate level of adherence (58.1%), while pain intensity was dominated by severe pain (41.9%). The Kendall’s tau-b correlation test analysis revealed no significant relationship between the level of knowledge and adherence to taking painkiller medication among postoperative patients at Sultan Agung Islamic Hospital Semarang (p=0.219, p>0.05).
