Abstract

Diarrhea is a common disease in children and, under certain conditions, requires antibiotic therapy. This study aimed to evaluate the appropriateness of antibiotic use in pediatric patients diagnosed with diarrhea at Purwosari Public Health Center in 2025 based on appropriate indication, patient, drug, and dosage criteria. This descriptive retrospective study used medical record data and a total sampling technique involving 11 pediatric patients receiving antibiotics. The appropriateness of antibiotic therapy was assessed using MIMS and Medscape references. Most patients were male (63.64%), aged 12–59 months (45.45%), and weighed 11–20 kg (54.55%). The antibiotics prescribed were cotrimoxazole (54.55%), amoxicillin (36.36%), and cefixime (9.09%). Based on MIMS, all antibiotic prescriptions met the criteria for appropriate indication, patient, drug, and dosage (100%). In contrast, Medscape assessment showed 100% appropriateness for indication and patient, 63.64% for drug selection, and 0% for dosage. In conclusion, antibiotic use was appropriate according to MIMS; however, discrepancies remained in drug selection and dosage when evaluated using Medscape.
