Abstract

Literacy and numeracy are fundamental competencies that need to be strengthened in education because they support students’ ability to understand information, use knowledge, solve problems, and make decisions in everyday life. This community service activity aimed to strengthen literacy and numeracy through the use of the school environment as a visual medium in the form of an educational mural. The activity was carried out by PLP-PP students at SMP Swasta RK Makmur BUDI MURNI 4 Medan using a participatory and descriptive approach. The stages of the activity included needs identification, mural design planning, preparation of media and materials, mural implementation, and evaluation of the activity results. The mural was designed to contain literacy messages, numeracy elements, learning motivation, character, creativity, and language, adapted to the needs and characteristics of junior high school students. The results showed that the mural not only functioned as a decoration for the school environment but also served as a visual learning medium combining texts, numbers, symbols, illustrations, mathematical formulas, and motivational slogans. Literacy elements were presented through messages about reading, learning, creating, as well as the use of Indonesian and English, while numeracy elements were represented through numbers, mathematical operations, number patterns, geometric shapes, and formulas for area and volume. The activity also provided PLP-PP students with experience in designing and implementing creative, collaborative, and contextual educational programs. Therefore, educational murals can be utilized as a visual medium to support the development of an educational school environment and strengthen literacy and numeracy culture. However, quantitative improvement in students’ literacy and numeracy skills was not the focus of measurement in this activity; therefore, further evaluation is needed to determine its learning impact more measurably.
