Abstract

This study examines metaphorical expressions in Miley Cyrus’s song lyrics from the album The Endless Summer Vacation (2023), aiming to identify their forms and describe their meanings. The lyrics are analyzed using Lakoff and Johnson’s (1980) Conceptual Metaphor Theory, which classifies metaphors into structural, orientational, and ontological types. A descriptive qualitative method is employed, with observation and note-taking used to collect and classify the data. The results reveal twenty-six metaphorical expressions: fourteen ontological, seven orientational, and five structural metaphors, making ontological metaphors the most frequent type. Most expressions convey connotative meanings associated with Cyrus’s personal experiences of love, heartbreak, self-reliance, and grief. The findings suggest that songwriters employ metaphors both to enhance lyrical expressiveness and to conceptualize and communicate difficult emotional experiences through familiar, concrete images. Metaphors thus serve as expressive devices and ways of understanding emotions within the lyrics. This study contributes to the growing body of research applying Conceptual Metaphor Theory to contemporary song lyrics by examining the relationship between metaphorical forms and their emotional meanings.
