Abstract

This research was motivated by the low reading comprehension skills of fourth-grade students at SDN 97/II Muara Bungo. Students still experienced difficulties in understanding reading content, identifying important information, understanding story elements, and answering questions based on the text. This study aimed to determine the improvement in the learning process and students’ reading comprehension skills through the implementation of the Storytelling method. The research employed Classroom Action Research (CAR), which was conducted in two cycles. The subjects of the study were 20 fourth-grade students. Data were collected through observations of teacher activities, observations of student activities, and reading comprehension skill tests. The results showed that student activity increased from 60% in Cycle I Meeting I to 83.3% in Meeting II, then increased to 96.7% in Cycle II Meeting I and reached 100% in Meeting II. Teacher activity increased from 73.3% to 80% in Cycle I, then to 86.7% and 100% in Cycle II. The final evaluation showed that 18 students (90%) achieved mastery, while 2 students (10%) had not achieved mastery. Thus, the Storytelling method improved the learning process and students’ reading comprehension skills and can be used as an active and engaging alternative for Indonesian language learning.
